Hello everyone,

it's been well over a year since I last blogged, but I have decided to make a return. The new blog is called Only the Lonely:

http://onlythelonelymusic.blogspot.com/

The music will be similar to both Luna blogs and I plan
to re-post many of the albums on those blogs, as all the links have been
dead since the demise of megaupload. The filehost I have chosen is
Mega.

I truly hope to see many of my old friends, comrades and
readers at the new blog. It should grow quickly. Please become
followers.

I've missed all of you immensely

Rubble is a 20-volume collection of compilation albums originally
compiled by Phil Smee for Bam Caruso Records throughout the eighties
and early nineties. As its name suggests, it is best thought of as the
British version of Nuggets, and similar to that legendary U.S. garage-rock comp, Rubble does
an unparallelled job of digging beneath the surface of its subject, in
this case, mid-to-late sixties British psychedelia, and uncovering a
plethora of forgotten gems in the process. While often associated with
"freakbeat," in actuality, Rubble also covers a good amount of
beat, mod-pop, garage-rock, psych-rock and early prog-rock. It is an
absolutely essential resource for discovering amazing late-sixties
Brit-pop obscurities, that, for various reasons, never attained
canonization but deserve, nonetheless, to be heard. I will be posting
all 20 volumes as separate installments, coupled with a few full albums
from artists featured on each compilation or artists that were
overlooked by the Rubble compilers, so if you already have the
volume featured in a given post, read on because there is much more to
be found after the jump!
BGO ~ 2000/1969

Despite the fact that The Koobas were among the most talented of the lesser known British beat bands, and were also fortunate enough to land an opening spot on the final British tour of fellow Liverpudlians, The Beatles, they were never able to turn these advantages into commercial success. In many ways, The Koobas followed a very similar trajectory to The Beatles in their early days, as the band had paid its dues playing the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany and was signed by none other than Brian Epstein in 1964, eventually inking a recording contract with Pye Records (also home to The Kinks at the time). After releasing several solid R&B-tinged singles during the mid-sixties that went nowhere in the charts, The Koobas, now signed to EMI, decided to try their hand at psychedelia, recording their one and only album throughout 1968; however, the band fell apart just as their album was being released, a shame since The Koobas is a better-than-average psych-era concept album.

This is a first rate compilation of the musical journey of guitarist Steve Howe prior to joining Yes. Starting with his first band, the R&B-influenced Syndicats, then moving to the mod-pop of In Crowd, the vastly underrated psychedelia of Tomorrow, and the proto-prog of Bodast, Mothballs also serves as a virtual road map for the development of British Rock during the latter half of the sixties.

EMI ~ 1999/1968

One of the initial psychedelic bands to appear on the British music scene in 1966, Tomorrow never attained the level notoriety or commercial success enjoyed by contemporaries such as Pink Floyd and Soft Machine, even though, in many ways, they were arguably the equals of these bands. Featuring a lineup that included vocalist Keith West, guitar-legend Steve Howe, and drummer John "Twink" Alder who would go on to form The Pink Fairies, Tomorrow enjoyed the distinction of recording the very first John Peel session in 1967. Tomorrow's eponymous 1968 debut, their sole album, while not as consistently brilliant as Sgt. Pepper or The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, is, nevertheless, one of the more focused, thus less self-consciously indulgent records to emerge from the British psych scene, and contains the cult classic, "My White Bicycle."

RPM ~ 1998

This compilation groups together a number of rarities from Tomorrow, a band that only recorded one official album during its lifetime, but played an essential role in the rise of the British psych scene. The second half of the album is comprised of live recordings from "Christmas on Earth Continued," a psychedelic event held at London Olympia that also featured The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, Traffic, The Move and Soft Machine. Apparently, The Who were also scheduled to play but never bothered showing up.

Rubble is a 20-volume collection of compilation albums originally compiled by Phil Smee for Bam Caruso Records throughout the eighties and early nineties. As its name suggests, it is best thought of as the British version of Nuggets, and similar to that legendary U.S. garage-rock comp, Rubble does an unparallelled job of digging beneath the surface of its subject, in this case, mid-to-late sixties British psychedelia, and uncovering a plethora of forgotten gems in the process. While often associated with "freakbeat," in actuality, Rubble also covers a good amount of beat, mod-pop, garage-rock, psych-rock and early prog-rock. It is an absolutely essential resource for discovering amazing late-sixties Brit-pop obscurities, that, for various reasons, never attained canonization but deserve, nonetheless, to be heard. I will be posting all 20 volumes as separate installments, coupled with a few full albums from artists featured on each compilation or artists that were overlooked by the Rubble compilers, so if you already have the volume featured in a given post, read on because there is much more to be found after the jump!

Originally founded by Wayne Fontana and named after a 1963 film starring Dirk Bogarde, The Mindbenders, hailing from Manchester, experienced some notable early chart success on both sides of the Atlantic, but as with many of the so-called "British Invasion" bands of the era, their star faded just as quickly. Fontana ended up quitting the band mid-concert in 1965, which left Eric Stewart to take the reigns, and while the band's post-Wayne Fontana work mined a similar soul-tinged Mersey-beat sound, they did, occasionally, attempt to push into less conventional thematic territory on their swan-song, With Woman in Mind. "Schoolgirl," which deals with the social ramifications of teen pregnancy, is a song as frank and gutsy as it is genuinely catchy; however, it predictably got The Mindbenders banned from the BBC, all but guaranteeing the album would flop, fating it to never see release in the U.S. Nevertheless, The Mindbenders' brand of soul-pop, with its light psychedelic touches, is well-worth a listen. Stewart went on, several years later, to form 10cc with Kevin Godley and Lol Creme.

Following the dissolution of the immensely talented yet commercially ill-fated British psych-band Tomorrow (which also included Keith West and Twink), guitarist Steve Howe formed a short-lived group called Bodast, which, despite rarely playing live, garnered interest from Deep Purple's record label Tetragrammaton, even managing to record an LP (produced by ex-Tomorrow band-mate Keith West), but their deal fell apart due to the label's bankruptcy a short time later, and the album was ultimately shelved until finally seeing release in the early eighties. Sound-wise, Bodast are exemplary of the late-sixties transition from "summer of love"-style psych-rock to what soon became know as progressive rock; as such, this chapter of Howe's career has tended to be overshadowed by both his previous work in Tomorrow and his later work in Yes. Nevertheless, Bodast left behind some strong material, such as "Do You Remember," a memorable rave-up that emphasizes the band's freakbeat origins over their proto-prog aspirations that occasionally weigh down some of the other songs.

Formed by the band's namesake along with brothers Steve and Muff Winwood in 1963, Birmingham's The Spencer Davis Group were one of the more dynamic British R&B groups of the mid-sixties. It was bassist Muff Winwood who came up with their intentionally plain yet oddly distinctive name: "Spencer was the only one who enjoyed doing interviews, so I pointed out that if we called it the Spencer Davis Group, the rest of us could stay in bed and let him do them." While known primarily as a singles band, their early albums are littered with R&B-influenced gems thanks to the budding talents of Steve Winwood. Of particular interest on their third album, Autumn '66, is one the band's finest moments, the Jackie Edwards-penned "Somebody Help Me, " a classic mid-tempo burner that is as gritty as it is catchy.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of maintaining a blog devoted to the sharing of music is the misinformation that the entertainment industry (aka "Big Content") and its political minions constantly disseminate regarding the relationship between copyright laws, piracy and file sharing. Simply put, at least in the U.S., file sharing does not legally equate to theft, this according to the U.S. Supreme court in a 1985 decision, which drew a clear distinction between theft and copyright infringement: "The infringer invades a statutorily defined province guaranteed to the copyright holder alone [....] But he does not assume physical control over the copyright; nor does he wholly deprive its owner of its use." The upshot of this is that file-sharing and personal copyright infringement are not criminal acts unless in pursuit of profit (they are technically referred to as "civil matters"), despite the endless flow of propaganda stating otherwise emanating from the MPAA and RIAA.

The real discussion to have is whether, ultimately, file-sharing negatively impacts the artists. Such arguments usually claim that sharing music is tantamount to taking money out of the pockets of artists, but what gets left out of the equation is the fact that copying music, whether in the form of ripping a CD to a harddrive or years ago, making a cassette mix-tape for a friend, in other words, people sharing music, has been an integral part of the appreciation and promotion of music for decades. While there are many artists who vociferously oppose file-sharing, Metallica and Julian Cope come to mind, there are many more who understand the promotional breadth and power of a free internet. Having said this, another way to look at this issue is to ask to what extent the major labels themselves are even necessary in the context of a free internet? They may claim to be looking after the financial welfare of their artists, but in reality, the artists take away a very small percentage of the profits generated by their work. In fact, it is easier to argue that it is the RIAA, not the music sharing community, that is truly guilty of theft. Perhaps it is time for these greedy corporate lackeys to go the way of the dinosaurs.

As a blogger, I have read countless comments by readers who, after discovering an artist on the blog by downloading shared files, say that they intend to purchase a physical copy of the posted album. While this is by no means true for all downloaders of shared files, it is far from the exception. I myself have purchased more music in the fifteen months I have been blogging than at any time in the past five years. All this brings me to the real point of this post, to introduce a new way of thinking about the issue of file-sharing and artist compensation: an artist donation platform & collective webzine called Amour & Discipline, which will make it possible to send voluntary donations of any amount to any indie artist or label on the planet.

From the founders of A&D, idealistic diy activists from Lyon, France, who have clearly put a lot of time, energy and passion into coming up with what could be the next stage in this ongoing conversation:

"The goal of A&D is notably to reach those who download a lot of music and don't buy records anymore. Let's face it: RIAA and others will never stop filesharing, nor convince everyone to opt for "legal" offers. Besides, most of them aren't very fair with artists (iTunes, Spotify...except Bandcamp). Technology leads to the fact that bands and labels have to give away their music, whether they like it or not. However, we think a lot of people downloading those records for free still want to support the artists/labels. So we want A&D to provide a direct, responsible and non-constrained way to pay back, in order to humbly help independent musical scenes to keep it up. A&D can also be very useful to support bands/labels whose records are out of print."

Here are a few links to the A&D website, which go into great depth about how this will all work:
More on How the A&D Donation Platform Will Work and on Transparency in the Donation Process

Amour & Discipline has impressed me with its emphasis on, and commitment to, transparency in the donation process, and I want to stress that donations are entirely voluntary. Also, the author(s) of this blog (which is only me at the moment) receive absolutely NO COMPENSATION through Amour & Discipline. Meta (~) Luna is committed to the principle that music-sharing blogs should in no way generate profits for their authors, whether it be via donations, ads, file-host points or anything else.

A Liverpudlian Mersey-beat/mod-pop group that was originally known as Just Four Men (good thing they reconsidered that moniker), Wimple Winch somehow never attained commercial success despite the fact that they were one of the more artistically dynamic bands to emerge during the tail-end of the Mersey scene. While their early sides were little more than second-rate attempts to sound like that other band from Liverpool, The Beatles, Wimple Winch eventually developed an impressive, and occasionally ground-breaking, sound of their own that produced what many argue is the first example of the mod-pop/early psych hybrid that in retrospect has come to be known as "freakbeat." Simply put, "Save My Soul," is one of the finest examples of early British psychedelia. Marrying mod-pop's R&B fetish to a scruffier American garage-rock sound, if Wimple Winch weren't solely responsible for creating the blueprint for freakbeat, they certainly were heavy contributors to the equation.

Although The Open Mind were fated to release only one album, their eponymous debut is, despite its relative obscurity, a singular gem deserving of wider recognition. Sitting midway between the mod-influenced freakbeat sound associated with the mid-sixties (it is clear the band had listened closely to the early Who) and a heavier acid-rock sound that anticipates certain aspects of the prog-rock movement of the early-seventies, The Open Mind manages to capture a unique moment in British psychedelia that is exemplified by "Magic Potion," a dark psych-rock tour de force that some have credited as being one of the earliest examples of heavy metal.

Easily one of the most talented, vastly underrated and strangely ill-fated garage-rock bands of the mid-sixties, the aptly named Misunderstood, originally hailing from Riverside, CA., started out as British R&B acolytes until adding steel guitarist Glenn Campbell (not that Glen Campbell!) and integrating his wonderful guitar-work into an edgy, atmospheric, bluesy, chaotic garage-psych sound that should have made them psych-rock legends. Thoroughly frustrated with their commercial prospects in the U.S., the band moved to England in 1966 at the behest of John Peel and quickly set about recording a set of songs (the first six tracks on Before the Dream Faded) that fully anticipated many of the more innovative aspects of the British psychedelic movement that would hit full stride in 1967. Glenn Campbell: "We kept getting reports from people that were seeing Pink Floyd that they were copying a lot of our stage act. The few times that we played, they obviously were in the audience and copied a lot of stuff. But they had a lot of money behind them [....] I don't think Jimi Hendrix ripped us off [....] he was still heavily blues-based at that point. It wasn't people were ripping off, really. It was a time of sharing, really. Things were just popping right and left at that time in England. I don't think we really appreciated the time when we were there. England was great [...] in the sense that you could be experimental." The original incarnation of The Misunderstood was doomed to fall apart the following year due to being badly mismanaged and threats from the U.S. Draft Board. Nevertheless, songs such as "Who Do You Love" and "My Mind" are spellbinding examples of early psych-rock at its most beautiful and groundbreaking. This is not to be missed!

This version of the single, "The Presence," is a little more straightforward than the Martin Hannett-produced studio version found on Live on a Hot August Night, and finds the Crispies thoroughly mining the Joy Division sound, but putting their own languid stamp on it.

This new version of the blog will return to the review and links to download format of the previous blog, but with some changes. I am planning on multi-installment reviews / histories focusing on specific artists or record labels. These will feature FLAC-only downloads. I will also post relevant (and not so relevant) photos and GIF files that I come across during my cyber travels. Most importantly, I want to thank all of you for your kind words and support during the past year, a difficult time for me to say the least. Coming into contact with so many good-hearted people out there in the music-sharing community has truly helped me not to give up. This is why I feel compelled to start the new blog. My work load has doubled since my Luna days, so posting will be less frequent; however, I'm hoping that aiming for quality will help overcome the lack of quantity. I'm planning to have my first review installment posted by this weekend.
